Industrial viability of single-component organic solar cells

Although the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells (OSCs) continue increasing toward 20% milestone, important factors for industrial application are mostly neglected, such as photostability and cost potential. Single-component OSCs (SCOSCs) employing materials with chemically bonded donor acceptor moieties successfully overcome immiscibility between well resultant self-aggregation under external stress. To inspire a broader interest, figure merit (i-FoM) BHJ corresponding SCOSCs is calculated analyzed, which includes PCE, photostability, synthetic complexity (SC) index. Despite having slightly more complex synthesis, all exhibit increased i-FoM values compared OSCs, increase in efficiency, possess further potential higher value. With excellent nearly investigated single-component semiconductors, coming into focus attention utilization.

A dumbbell-like A-D-A molecule, triad 1, containing a dithienosilole-dibenzothiadiazole donor unit and two fullerene acceptor units was designed and synthesized.
